Engineered Lignin Solutions for Reliable Loss Control
Founded on advanced lignin chemistry, ICT Oilfield Products delivers tool-friendly, high-performance lost circulation materials that seal fractures, stabilize the wellbore, and reduce drilling losses. Proven through precise particle sizing and rigorous quality control, ICT solutions provide dependable performance across drilling environments worldwide.
Our Story
Impact Composite Technology was formed in the year 2000, processing Lignin Resin from byproducts of the Texas Cotton Gin Industry. ICTs scientifically engineered Lignin Resins were initially used to impart impact strength in thermoplastic and thermoset applications. This engineered Cross Link reaction from Lignin in various resin systems resulted in reduced VOC emissions that qualified for EPA credit. It was later discovered that the secondary byproduct of this manufacturing process was an extremely effective high Lignin LCM. ICT was later reformed as ICT OILFIELD PRODUCTS in 2009 to service the Drilling & Mining industries with Absorbents & Lost Circulation Materials.
CS Hulls have been used as LCM in the drilling industry for generations. ICT took the next step, targeting Fiber PSD for tool friendly “pumpable” LCM pills & slurries. Proprietary grinding & screening machinery was installed to provide LCM users with uniform PSD of LIGNIN CELLULOUS FIBER (LCF). LCF has lint and Gin trash removed, which can rope in pits & pumps. Soon LCM loads were being shipped to basins throughout the USA, GOM & Internationally. ICTs BHA friendly PSD made ICTs byproduct “the product” in the evolution of performance LCM.
A key success of ICTs LCF is high organic Lignin content. Lignin provides the same benefits in LCM, as it does in the Chemical industry. Under downhole heat and pressure, Lignin bonds to itself. Lignin bonding effectively seals fractures, mitigates loss zones & provides mechanical well bore stability. Lignin chemistry in Fiber particles makes LCF much more effective than fiber or minerals alone. Utilizing LCF in finer particle sizes, lignin acts as a catalyst with polymer WBM filtrate control. With Invert OBM, High Lignin LCM has a significantly lower effect on OBM electrical stability than other mineral and fiber LCM. LCF has minimal abrasive silica content, affecting BHA tools and Mud pumps much less than abrasive Mineral based LCMs. Another key benefit of high Lignin LCF is limited fiber swelling once hydrated. LCM fibers that swell often provide temporary loss zone mitigation, then swell from hydration and induce formation damage and further losses. Swelling Fiber often requires ongoing or more aggressive LCM treatments to maintain initial loss mitigation success. Simply put: ICT LCF seals seeps and fractures without becoming a fracture proppant.
While maintaining historical PSD grinds from 1⁄2'’ down, ICT embraced the evolution of directional technology, targeting increasingly smaller “pumpable” PSD grinds. This particle size evolution allows for high PPB BHA friendly LCF pills and active system slurries. Most LCMs are lost to shakers after a single surface to surface sweep. ICT targeted micron ranges allowing for high LCF active system treatment lasting longer than a single circulation. Often regional Mud plants pretreat with ICT LCF, shipping LCM pretreated value plus drilling fluid to Rig sites on losses.
ICT later incorporated Ribbon Blending technology to boost LCF properties with other performance Fibers, minerals, polymers and bitumen's for well bore stability chemistry. This allowed ICT to offer the PERFORMANCE PARTICLE line of specialty LCMs.
ICT offers a specialty Squeeze mix for aggressive loss zones. When paired with a properly engineered squeeze procedure, ICT Squeeze can result in significant cost savings to operators in Cement crews, WOC downtime, and Drilling Fluid lost to formation.
ICT also provides an absorbent with high affinity to chemical & hydrocarbon spills. ICT CleanB Sorb doubles as an effective LCM, providing the drilling industry with a high value dual use product.
ICT leadership has decades of experience in O&G, Mining & Geothermal Industry's. The ICT core principle is providing cost effective value to Operators, Mud Companies, & Mud Engineers. ICTs QC lab utilizes an advanced Hosokawa Jet Sieve, which precisely graphs D10-D97 PSD for accurate end user data. Pallets are neatly finished in 12mo UVI protection shrink wrap for long term storage. Pallets are labeled with product type, total sack count and sacks per row to assist end user Warehouse & Mud Engineers with accurate Rig site & Stock point inventory.
